Regis Toowong re-thinks aged care design.
Regis Toowong is a proposal for a new 4 - 5 storey aged care facility at 15 Jephson Street Toowong. It is the result of extensive research into the provision of aged care post Royal Commission and the pandemic. The proposal features 120 rooms with 16 dedicated to residents with dementia. Close to two-thirds of the proposed building is devoted to communal and public areas, including co-located care uses on ground level. Common area gardens feature significant landscaping for residents to interact with and dwell in. The building consists of 120 resident rooms, clustered in neighbourhoods of 8-10. Two of these neighbourhoods are then paired into community groups. This grouping becomes the cohort of residents who frequently lounge and dine together. Meals that are distributed to these communities are prepared in an open server akin to a home kitchen. Generous external spaces are afforded to each community with a central gathering space, function area and courtyard situated on level 1. The entry at ground level is flanked by a café, courtyard, and spa/hair salon. The arrangement of spaces allows for safe passage during outbreaks of ill-health, with the building operations able to be reconfigured at short notice in response to any situation. Most rooms and public spaces are oriented to the north with long range views over the surrounding suburbs to the city. Landscape intertwines the external spaces of the building with substantial sun shading to control light and glare to all rooms.
