Thoughtful refurbishment can create functional and vibrant spaces that not only significantly enhance the quality of life for the residents but also provide a comfortable and efficient work environment for caregivers.

O’Neill Architecture was appointed as both the architects and interior designers for the refurbishment of the Regis Sandgate Musgrave building, a facility over 50 years old. The project required modernising the space to meet current aged care standards while overcoming the inherent challenges posed by the building's existing structures. The project aims to seamlessly balance modern functionality with the limitations of the existing design, all while creating a welcoming and homely environment for elderly residents, visitors, and staff alike. The refurbishment included significant accessibility upgrades and enhancements, as much as the existing structure allowed, to meet current aged care standards. These improvements have created a safer, more functional environment, which also helps elevate the quality of care. The complex nature of aged care design lies in the creation of a home for the residents with providing a functional workplace for the staff. A well-designed environment fosters a more productive workspace, contributing to better care delivery and overall job satisfaction. Emphasis was placed on optimising spaces to be both practical and aesthetically pleasing, addressing the emotional and physical needs of elderly residents. Calming colours and thoughtful furniture designs were incorporated to enhance comfort and well-being. The project exemplifies how thoughtful refurbishment can create functional and vibrant spaces that not only significantly enhance the quality of life for the residents but also provide a comfortable and efficient work environment for caregivers.
